Monday's Musing: Whatcha Gonna Do?

Whether therefore ye eat, or drink, or whatsoever ye do, do all to the glory of God.    -1 Corinthians 10:31 (KJV)

So...my one and only child is starting kindergarten in a couple of weeks. He's 99% excited and 1% nervous. I'm excited for him but also TERRIFIED. I just pray that they don't lose him or lock him in a closet out of frustration. I'll be that mom who is looking at her phone a hundred times a day, (panicking!) wondering if I missed a call from the school.

Since it doesn't seem that another child is anywhere in my near future (but would be oh so so so welcome!), I need to find something to occupy my newly found free time this fall. I am doing my last allowed year of MOPS (Mother's of Pre-Schoolers), but since my boy will be in school it won't take up as much of my time since I won't be needing to attend the playdates.

Thoughts were running through my mind about what I want to do to keep myself busy. I have this blog, but I don't want to spend all of my free time at my computer. I do want to become closer to God, that is for sure. And since my only child is starting school, isn't this when I'm supposed to also use my time to get healthier? I certainly wouldn't have the excuse of no time any more.

So, I am signing up for a fall Bible study AND an exercise boot camp at my church. (Lord, help me!) I haven't really exercised in the past six years so a boot camp style class is going to be hard, but it's the only exercise class my church has. So I'm going to do it. I love that I will be getting healthier with other christian ladies at the church, and that the class has a devotional at the end of each session!

To compliment the exercise class and healthier living for the Lord, the Bible study I chose is Lysa TerKeurst's Made to Crave. It's focus is for your life to be based on craving more of God, not more food. I need this. Whenever I get stressed or lonely, sadly my first instinct is to start stuffing myself full of totally not healthy foods and tons of sugary candy. Sometimes I've already eaten half a bag of candy before I even realize what I'm doing. This study is sure to be a big eye opener for me!

What are you plans this fall once the kids start school?
Are you doing anything to get closer to God?
Has anyone read Made to Crave - if so, did it help you with your food cravings?
I'd love to hear your story!

  1. I know that anxiety of kindergarten was greater for than my children! I'd wander around trying to figure out what I was suppose to be doing...

Enjoy your moments of "freedom". :) And enjoy your study - I've had my eye on that book for awhile!

    1. Thank you! Even though I am planning ahead and signing up for things to occupy my time, I know there is still going to be plenty of time for me to wander around lost, missing my son! At least I will have more time to blog and clean the house! :)

  2. Sounds like you have just the right Bible study selected--not only for better physical health, but also Spiritual.

Blessings to you as your little one starts school.

    Stopping by from Shanda's.

  3. I remember the nerves of dropping off my children for their first day of Kindergarten, trying to be so positive so as not to pass on any worries to my little ones. Eager to pick them up at the end of the day to see how their day went. Time sure flies, my oldest will be starting her senior year of high school this fall, almost as equally nerve wracking. :) I always enjoy fall and back to school time, plenty of time to get the house organized and reconnect with community school events. The book Made to Crave sounds very interesting, I will have to check it out. :)

  4. what a great goal - more time to fill your body with God and get healthy in the process, I think that is an excellent way to start this new chapter!

  5. My youngest will be starting her 2nd year of college. It seems like yesterday she was beginning kindergarten. You'll be surprised at how easy it is to fill those hours. Sounds like you have a good start. And what better way than to use it to draw closer to God.

  6. Oh I am so nervous about my oldest starting kindergarten as well! He's a total boy, loves to run, laugh and play and doesn't like to sit still. I hope the teacher has a lot of patience and some understanding of how boys work :)

  7. My youngest starts kindergarten this year, too, so I'm right there as well! :) I LOVED Made to Crave and probably need to read it again. It really challenged me to change the way I looked at food and how I can put my joy/satisfaction in something as silly as a DQ Blizzard, lol!

I think I'm going to be leading a ladies' Bible study at our church once school gets started, and I'm looking forward to having the time and freedom to do that, now that both of my kids are in school. My husband and I are also training for our second marathon, so I anticipate many hours spent out hitting the pavement. :) Hope you enjoy boot camp! I've heard great things about it!

    1. Thank you for sharing! I'm so glad to hear that you like Made to Crave! I'm excited to start it. Wow! Marathons are impressive - good luck! It's great that you and your husband share the same interests in running! My husband abhors exercise, so I'm glad that my church offers a class. I'll be with women I trust and glorifying God at the same time!

  8. Maybe work at the MOPS?
Sounds like you've got a great schedule. I need to check out that Made to Crave study. I'm getting ready to start one (MacDonald/Pell) Lord, Change my attitude. It seems to be timed perfectly - as are the other ones I've done.

Enjoy your new endeavors and hope your son enjoys kinder.

    1. I may just have to start working at MOPS next year just to hang out with my other mommy friends since they have younger children as well. The Bible study you mentioned sounds like a good one - I think we could all use it! :) Thank you for taking the time to comment!

  9. I am a comfort food eater - and have to beware. Maybe if you have a heart for more children, you can volunteer in a place that mentors to children? God will show you where you need to go and it will be an amazing adventure. Wishing you peace in the journey

  10. I have been considering my own tendency to eat for pleasure or comfort and trying to give that over to the Lord day after day. I've not heard of that study, but I would love to hear what you think of it! Enjoy this new stage of life for your family!

  11. Great goals. Some of my grandkids homeschool so I help with that as well as help my senior mom. School days give us a bit more structure but are still quite busy for me. Have a blessed year!

  12. You reminded me of when my 16 yr. old started school. I had your same fears...it was so hard for me to let go but she was excited and eager and it all worked out fine.

  14. It doesn't seem so long ago that my youngest started kindergarten, but he will be 50 in November so obviously it has been a very long time. Sounds like you have some very worth while goals in mind. The scripture you started this post out is important to remember. Thank you for sharing.
    Blessings,
    Charlotte
