Recycled Cardboard Tube Sun Catchers!

2 Samuel 23:4

King James Version (KJV)
And he shall be as the light of the morning, when the sun riseth, even a morning without clouds; as the tender grass springing out of the earth by clear shining after rain.

This is a great, inexpensive and fun project to do with your kids. The possibilities are as endless as your imagination! So save up your paper towel or toilet tissue tubes and delve into your happy creative side.

Materials Needed:

Paper towel or toilet tissue tubes
Tissue paper in various colors
Paint – my stock is limited, so I used green and gold, but use what colors you want!
Glue
Ribbons to hang
Clothespins or other clips to hold it together while drying

I also used a flat trash bag to protect my dining room table.

Start by measuring and marking your tube to cut into circles. ¾” to 1” is good. Make them equally sized, and cut as straight as you can. Feel free to partially flatten the tube for easier cutting.

For the Easter eggs I cut a tube into long strips

Lay out and shape your circles into desired shapes. I cut extra long strips for flower stems, leaves, and butterfly antennae.

Decide what colors you want your designs to be and paint. This is where your trashbag covered table comes in handy. Paint both the outside and inside of your circles and extra parts, for both sides will show. Let dry.

Lay out your tissue papers, and dip each piece lightly into the glue and then press into the tissue paper. Let dry. Gently cut out each piece. If you accidentally tear your tissue paper, don’t worry, you can glue more on the back - it just creates a bit of a patchwork effect.

To make the Easter eggs, I simply took a long strip of the painted cardboard and made an oval egg shape. I then overlapped the ends and cut a slit through them both. I then threaded my hanging ribbon through the two slits and it held together the egg. Then proceed with the gluing of the tissue paper. I also glued on some hole-punch polka-dots for extra decoration on one of my plain eggs.

For the rest of the designs, arrange your pieces and begin gluing and clamping. Let dry.

Use a hole-punch to add a pretty ribbon for hanging.
